mFish

About

mFish is a mobile application that allows fishers in developing nations to digitally log their harvest. They receive access to information on weather, best practices, and market pricing when available. mFish Trace uses a blockchain solution, Fishcoin, that is developing incentives for fishers to use the app, exchanging key data elements for traceability for mobile top-ups.

mFish exists to create a data ecosystem and help address the inefficiencies and unsustainable practices within the fishing and aquaculture industry. This helps to prevent food waste, protect the livelihoods and wellbeing of fishers, and conserve commercially and ecologically important fish populations and their habitat.

Capability and features

Fishers use the browser based application to access education courses (best practices, stock status, data collection etc), catch/harvest logbook, market prices, weather forecast, and messenger services.

This equips them with best practice information and rewards producers for digitally logging their harvest with mobile top-ups.

NGOs can create content and use the Course Management System to educate fishers and fish farmers on best practices. They can also receive catch data from local fishers who are part of a fishery improvement project.

Governments can use mFish’s messenger for communicating directly with fishers, informing them about regulations, closures, gear restrictions etc. Governments can also receive data to get a better understanding of catch per unit effort for stock assessment, which improves their fisheries management plans.

Progress to date

To date, mFish has engaged over 16,000 fishers, and their application is available in over 30 countries in seven languages. mFish and Fishcoin are being piloted with Thai Union one of the largest seafood suppliers in the world, with pilots in the works with other producers in Alaska, Indonesia, Malaysia, Africa, Sri Lanka, and a leading sustainability brand in Mexico.

TaniFund

About

TaniFund is a crowdfunding platform for agricultural activities in Indonesia. TaniFund connects farmers with alternative financing from the broader public. Individuals and/or entities can choose to invest their fund into a cultivation project of their preference. TaniFund’s innovation is a solution for the unbankable smallholders farmers and, at the same time, benefits those with excessive funds with a profitable investment option.

Capability and features

TaniFund’s projects are exclusively for groups of farmers, not individuals. This approach allocates the responsibility to the group in keeping their farmer members in check (i.e. in microfinance, in repayment, whilst in TaniFund’s scheme, in ensuring levels of production).

Funds gathered from the public are not disbursed lump sum at the beginning of the project, unlike most banks and financial institutions, but weekly, according to the farmers needs. These amounts are calculated at the beginning—which then will be included in the prospectus—involving both the farmers and TaniFund’s team, before the project is even posted in TaniFund’s website. One uniqueness of TaniFund is that in this calculation, labor cost of the farmers are included so as to ensure that the farmers have a steady income, to cover their household expenditures.

The project period is designed as to provide more than one harvest, to anticipate any force majeures that can resulted in harvest failure. This is to keep the accountability in ensuring public’s funds invested in TaniFund’s projects. In the anticipation against agriculture practices that are prone to force majeures, is the diversification of projects’ location, so if half a hectare suffers a pest invasion, there is still half that can produce harvests.

The harvest produced from TaniFund projects is absorbed entirely by the marketplace TaniHub, and priced in accordance to TaniHub’s quality standard. This is a mitigation against price volatility in the market in the future (prices are agreed upon during the making of prospectus).

Progress to date

TaniFund has managed to crowdfund USD 1.5 million, distributed to 35 projects. TaniFund is the first winner of Mandiri Finspire and has crowdfunded over USD140,000 in less than 18 hours.

TaniFund has worked with over 855 farmers, and has partnerships with International Finance Corporation (IFC) and several Indonesian banks – channeling their loans to smallholder farmers.

TaniFund is working to incorporate climate smart practice into the projects, as to encourage resilience and climate adaptive practice in Indonesian agriculture landscape.

The Asein Yone Mat Tan feature is the result of many research projects to find the best-fit solution for farmers, traders and contract farming organizations. With Asein Yone Mat Tan, farming timelines can be planned, farming activities recorded and this farming digital tool can help manage the farmers’ problems and track potential and actual yields and also provide traceability of the yields.

The development team created the Group Function, a place for users to start group discussions in a public or private setting for topics related to agriculture. It is aimed at strengthening existing networks and creating new networks of farmers with similar interests and goals.

Drones for Agriculture

About

The agriculture industry often faces issues with lack of transparency, management, labour problems etc. Drones for Agriculture are using aerial analytics and automation to solve key issues. First, drones are used to quickly map a large area of a plantation, then proprietary algorithms are used to analyse the crops for health. Finally, autonomous spraying drones perform targeted spraying on affected areas. Plantation owners also have a copy of the land map for management purposes to streamline operations.

Capability and features

Poladrone’s proprietary algorithms allow users to quickly and accurately derive useful information from images captured, such as accurate oil palm count, categorisation, health, roads, infrastructure, rivers, etc. These algorithms help to streamline the analytics process which is traditionally a very manual process.

Poladrone has its own agriculture spraying drone locally in Malaysia, allowing them to provide superior after sales services and support to our customers.

Progress to date

To date, Poladrone have mapped over 150,000 acres of plantations, won Echelon Asia 2017 and have been appointed as DJI Enterprise and Sentera dealers.

Poladrone have a partnership with Microsoft, co-develop AI solutions with their engineering team, as well as a R&D partnership with University Putra Malaysia, Malaysia’s largest and only university dedicated towards agriculture.

The team are currently build a spraying drone which is able to perform targeted spraying automatically on oil palm.

ImPACT

About

Pessl Instruments GmbH (Pessl), an Austrian AgTech company, aims to improve the climate resilience of smallholder Filipino farmers through a public private partnership called “Improving Productivity in Agriculture through Climate-Smart Technology” or ImPACT. Pessl has deployed over 32 proprietary agro-meteorological IoT devices that enable farmers to adopt Climate-Smart Agriculture in their daily farming activities. These devices autonomously measure and transmit environmental data, which is processed and delivered to farmers in the via a simplified mobile application. Farmers are able to use this data to reduce their chemical footprint and improve their yield.

Capability and features

ImPACT allows farmers to monitor all relevant climatic conditions and soil parameters, bringing their agricultural work management one step higher. ImPACT combines monitored and forecasted data to get a powerful tool, which optimizes production and lets farmers produce more with less.

With the help of climatic and soil monitoring and forecasting farmers can:

  1. Monitor climatic conditions in nurseries to avoid germination problems when sowing vegetables.
  2. Optimize fertilization time
  3. Optimize plant protection activities to have disease free yield.
  4. Manage irrigation by monitoring soil moisture, identifying when a crop is suffering water stress and starting an irrigation system on time.

Progress to date

ImPACT has reduced the input usage of farmers, enabling more precise documentation of farmers’ daily activity and improved crop yields.

ImPACT have worked with a control group of 100 farmers, expanding to 5,000 farmers in 2019 and 10,000 farmers by 2020.

Deployment will be made sustainable through a service model, e.g. farmers pay $1 per month for the application and are therefore able to save money on chemicals and increase their incomes.
